Distracted driving is an increasing problem in Chicago and across Illinois. To address the issue, lawmakers in Illinois have banned hand-held cell phones while driving, an attempt to get motorists to put down their phones and to focus on the roads. Hands-free cell phones are still permitted though experts argue that the conversation alone on a phone is distracting, regardless of whether the phone is being held or not.

The law is now clear: drivers who use their cell phones in a non-hands-free manner may be ticketed as breaking the rules of the road. The idea is to increase the safety for everyone on the roads, including those who choose to use their phone, but also the passengers, drivers, and pedestrians in the area of cell-phone using motorists.

The victims of distracted driving car accidents may not be able to erase the accident but they may be able to obtain relief for their damages. A civil claim can enable a victim to recover for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering in addition to any other financial and non-economic damages incurred due to the collision. Speaking with a personal injury lawyer may help you understand your legal options if you have been victimized, including whether you are entitled to seek relief.

Police in suburban Lombard have noticed that cell phone usage has been linked to a number of collisions in their area. In fact, officials have estimated that 1/3 of all accidents in the area are contributed to by cell phone usage. To combat this hazard, officers are starting an enforcement campaign scheduled to begin this Friday, August 1, 2014. Officers will be looking for violators who use hand-held cell phones while driving and will be issuing citations as appropriate. The campaign is scheduled to run through the end of August but tickets will continue after that point as officers continue to enforce the new ban.

Drivers in Lombard are being encouraged to refrain from using their cell phones while driving or to use a hands-free method that complies with the new Illinois law if they wish to avoid a ticket.

Annually, motorcycles are involved in approximately 1.5 percent of all traffic accidents yet bike riders make up 3.5 percent of all traffic injuries and nearly 16 percent of all fatalities, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The victims of motorcycle collisions can be injured and can be forced to bear the suffering that comes along with these accidents. Speaking with a personal injury lawyer in Chicago may help you understand your legal options if you have been involved in a crash or your legal rights if your loved one has lost his or her life.

Authorities in Schaumburg were alerted to a collision between a car and a motorcycle yesterday afternoon near the intersection of Roselle Road and Hartford Drive. It is not clear at this time what caused the incident but the motorcycle and the vehicle collided, leading to injuries on behalf of the biker and the woman driving the car.

The injuries sustained by the biker, identified as a 23-year-old man living in Hoffman Estates, were too severe and he was pronounced dead while still at the scene. The female driver of the car was the only occupant of that vehicle. She was transported by ambulance to St. Alexius Medical Center for treatment where she is expected to recover.

As the investigation into this incident continues, it is possible that traffic citations will issue. Officials have not stated what they believe to be contributing factors at this time or whether either driver acted in a negligent manner prior to the impact.

Car accidents in Chicago are responsible for thousands of injuries every year. Those inside the car as well as others in the area, like bicyclists and pedestrians, are at risk when a collision occurs. Any driver can be involved in an accident even if that driver is cautious behind the wheel because unlike some other aspects of life, the safety of those on the road depends on the actions of every single driver in the area.

Yet some types of drivers are more likely to be involved in a collision than others. Drivers with less experience, including teens, may not have the necessary skills to avoid a collision when an incident presents itself. Teen car accidents impact the entire state due to the physical toll and financial expenses that result from these collisions. Not only that, but in 2012 alone, 71 teenagers were killed in car accidents in Illinois and teen drivers were involved in more than four percent of all fatal accidents in the state.

Teenagers should not have to worry about things like car accident but unfortunately in Chicago, the reality of these crashes means that it must be of concern to teenagers and parents alike. Though nothing can undue a collision once it has occurred, the victims of these crashes may be entitled to seek legal relief for their injuries, including payment for any and all medical expenses incurred. Speaking with a personal injury lawyer in Chicago may help you understand your legal options if you or if your teenage son or daughter have been involved in a crash.

Police in Chicago were called to the scene of a crash in the Loop last night, shortly after 8:00 p.m. The crash occurred in the 200 block of South Lower Wacker Drive and involved two vehicles, a Chevrolet Equinox and a Mercedes. Officials believe that a 16-year-old male was behind the wheel of the Equinox when the Equinox made an illegal turn in the area, putting the vehicle in the path of the Mercedes, which was traveling southbound. The two vehicles collided and one rolled over the crash.

Emergency medical crews responded to the scene and transported the driver and four passengers in the Equinox to area hospitals for treatment. Three of the occupants were teenagers and the fourth was 20-years-old, according to police. All suffered serious injuries but are expected to survive. The other driver, a 61-year-old male, reportedly was uninjured in the accident.

A house is a place where a family lives and grows. It should provide a safe shelter to those who call it home and protect them when needed.

But there are risks with any home, whether it is the home you are living in or merely the home of a friend you are visiting. Cracked or broken steps may cause a fall that can lead to an injury. Water that is too hot to be safe can scald when washing your hands or bathing a child. An icy accumulation on steps can lead to a slip-and-fall accident. All of these situations and more can present a premises liability accident that may lead to injury by a victim or even death in the worst cases.

Though the victims of accidents cannot undue that which happened to them, they may be able to seek relief that can eliminate the financial damage done. Compensation may be available to cover medical expenses, lost wages, and even provide payment for pain and suffering, depending on the facts of the accident and the circumstances surrounding it. Speaking with a personal injury lawyer may help you understand your legal options if you have been involved in an accident that left you hurt.

Officials in Bensenville confirmed a tragic fire incident that claimed the life of a four-year-old boy on Wednesday afternoon. The fire took root in a home in the 1500 block of West Devon Avenue at approximately 2:00 p.m. Firefighters were on the scene and spoke with a family member who informed them that a child was still inside the home. The firefighters searched the home as quickly as possible to find the boy but by the time he was discovered, he had already passed away in the fire. Six family members were able to escape the home safely but two dogs were killed in the fire.

Officials are still investigating the fire, including the cause of the initial flame, and trying to determine what factors led to the boy’s tragic death.

Drivers are at risk for an accident every time they get in their car and begin driving. Most of those threats come from other motorists, defects in the road, or fixed objects like light poles. But debris in the road also poses a threat to safety and is responsible for numerous collisions every year.

Chicago car accidents cause thousands of injuries every year. Cook County is home to more car accidents than any other county in the state due in part to the large population and the large number of motorists on the streets every day. In 2011 alone, more than 280,000 traffic accidents caused more than 84,000 injuries and over 900 deaths. That averaged to more than two fatalities a day.

Those who are injured in car collisions in Illinois are not without help. They are often entitled to seek relief for their damages including monetary compensation to cover financial losses. This can help victims pay for their needed medical treatment and surgical expenses as well as provide compensation for lost wages. Speaking with a personal injury lawyer in Chicago may help you understand your legal options if you have been involved in a crash.

Officials in Illinois have confirmed an unusual accident that left one driver dead on on Wednesday morning. Though it is early in their investigation, officials believe that a driver in a Chevrolet Blazer was traveling southbound on the I-94 near 130th Street when a tire came off from the vehicle. The tire reportedly crossed into the northbound lanes and struck the windshield of a vehicle, causing a serious collision that left the driver critically injured. Emergency medical crews tended to the victim and transported her to Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn but her injuries were too severe and she was pronounced dead shortly before 7:00 a.m.

Officials closed portions of I-94 in the area as they investigated at the scene and removed debris from the collision. The driver of the Blazer reportedly was not injured in the incident but was cited by police for driving with unsafe tires, driving without insurance, and driving without a valid vehicle registration. As the investigation continues, more charges may be brought.

If you have been fortunate enough to never be involved in a car accident, consider yourself lucky. But even if that is the case, chances are that you know a friend, family member, neighbor, or co-worker who has been involved in a collision or who has had their life affected by a crash. There were over 280,000 traffic-related accidents in Illinois in 2011 alone and many of those collisions involved more than one individual.

Car accident can lead to financial distress among victims who are suddenly faced with mounting medical bills. The expenses felt by these victims may be exacerbated if they are unable to work and therefore are unable to bring in the funds necessary to support themselves and their families. When you have done nothing wrong but are injured by the actions of another, it may seem unfair that the burden rests on your shoulders. It does not have to, though, as victims of car accidents in Chicago are entitled to seek relief for their damages through the use of a civil claim. Speaking with a personal injury lawyer may help you understand your legal options if you have been involved in a crash, including whether you have a valid claim for your injuries.

Police in the Archer Heights neighborhood of Chicago learned of a two car accident on Monday that left one driver dead. According to officials and witnesses, it appeared that one driver may have been traveling in excess of the speed limit near the area of Pulaski Road and 41st Street around 4:00 a.m. The driver is believed to have struck part of a second car in the area, leading the first driver to lose control and leave the road’s surface. The first car then collided with a pole in the area, causing the vehicle to come to a rest.

Emergency medical crews responded to the scene and transported the driver in the first car to Mount Sinai Hospital where doctors tended to him. Unfortunately, the man’s injuries were too severe and he died as a result of the crash. It did not appear that the second driver involved in the crash was seriously injured though his current condition remains unknown.

Semi-trucks are a staple on Illinois roads, moving from city to city every day and hauling product as they travel. The movements of trucks and truck drivers are governed by strict state and federal laws with different standards than those that apply to private operates of cars. Failing to comply with trucking regulations can not only be a violation of the law but also can be negligent or recklessness, standards of conduct which can hold the truck driver liable for any injuries that result in a collision.

Truck accidents in Chicago occur too often and cause too many injuries. The victims of these crashes may deal with debilitating injuries or even may lose their lives, leaving behind family members who will never fully recover from the crash. Though nothing can undo an accident once it occurs, the victims or the surviving family members of these accidents may be entitled to seek financial relief for their loses, including medical bills, through the use of a civil claim. Speaking with a personal injury lawyer in Chicago may help you understand if you have a valid claim for your damages following a truck accident.

Yesterday proved to be a fatal day on I-55 between 2:17 p.m. and 2:33 p.m. Two separate collisions involving semi-trucks led to the deaths of five people on the expressway, according to local authorities.

The first truck crash took place around 2:17 p.m. near Elmwood, just prior to a construction zone. Witnesses reported that traffic was at a stop as merging down to one lane was taking place. Reportedly, a semi-truck in the area was traveling at a high rate of speed in the left lane when it made a lane change, striking the rear of a stopped vehicle and pushing that first vehicle into two others. The truck driver, a 51-year-old man, survived the crash but four people in the other vehicles involved, including an 11-year-old girl, were killed in the crash.

The truck driver involved was arrested and has been charged with falsifying entries in his log book, a violation of federal trucking laws if he is convicted. Additional charges may be levied as the investigation into this incident continues.

Long days and warm weather come to Chicago every summer and draw people outside. With a number of residential homes around the city possessing outdoor seating areas, many citizens can enjoy summertime while staying at home or visiting a friend. Porches, decks, and patios can provide a great spot to sit back and relax.

Most people do not think about the safety of a porch when they are using it, but often these porches and decks are in states of disrepair, leading to a potentially hazardous situation and a premises liability accident. These incidents may lead to injuries and the victims of these accidents may be entitled to financial relief. If you have been hurt in a Chicago porch accident, you should consider speaking with a personal injury lawyer to learn about your legal options, including whether you have a valid claim for relief.

Chicago has experienced yet another porch collapse, according to local police. The most recent incident occurred on Sunday evening on the city’s West Side and sent eight people, including two children, to area hospitals.

Officials have reported that the eight victims were in the vicinity of a porch in the 700 block of North St. Louis Avenue around 6:00 p.m. when a porch collapsed for reasons that are not yet clear. At least one adult was in serious condition following the incident but the status of the other victims is not known at this time. Emergency medical crews responded to the crash and transported all victims to nearby hospitals including Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center, Mount Sinai Hospital, and Norwegian-American Hospital.

Like many porches in Chicago, the porch at issue was reportedly constructed of wood. Wood is a safe choice when it comes to building a deck or a porch but it deteriorates with time and exposure to nature, meaning that it must be maintained and rotten or decaying portions must be replaced periodically. Failure to do this may undermine the integrity and structural soundness of a porch. At this early stage of the investigation, officials have not yet determined whether rot or decay played a part in this porch collapse accident.

Drunk driving accidents often claim the lives of innocent victims or leave those victims with serious, potentially life long injuries. Though a driver who is apprehended operating while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is likely to face criminal charges, the victims hurt by a collision will not receive compensation by the use of any criminal charges, even if the suspected drunk driver is found guilty.

But that does not mean that victims are without the ability to seek relief. The laws in Chicago and across Illinois allow those hurt by the actions of others, including those who are injured in a drunk driving crash, with the right to bring a civil claim for damages. With this claim, a victim can seek proper compensation for damages including medical and surgical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Speaking with a personal injury lawyer in Chicago who represents car accident victims may help you understand your legal options if you have been involved in a crash or if your loved one lost his or her life.

Police in Naperville responded to a reported one car accident early Saturday morning near the Naperville Park District quarry. At this time, it appears that a 21-year-old man was behind the wheel with two male passengers in his car as he drove near Aurora Avenue and Eagle Street. The man allegedly lost control of the car and left the road’s surface, striking several buildings before the vehicle came to rest in water at the quarry. The driver was conscious after the final impact and was able to escape the vehicle to safety on the shore.

The two passengers in the car were not as lucky. They were unable to free themselves and had to be rescued by divers who responded to the scene. All three men were taken to area hospitals for treatment. The driver was released a short time later but both passengers were pronounced dead from their injuries.

Though still early in their investigation, police believe that the driver was legally intoxicated at the time of the crash. He has been arrested and is facing multiple charges including two counts of reckless homicide and aggravated driving under the influence resulting in death.

The weekend weather forecast in Chicago shows idea conditions to ride a motorcycle. If you are in the city or elsewhere across Illinois in the next few days, odds are that you might see a biker or two hitting the roads. Keep that in mind when driving since being aware of motorcycles and operating a vehicle in a safe manner is the best way to prevent a collision from occurring.

Bikers have the same right to ride as any driver of a car has to drive on the streets yet the rights of bikers are not as well respected as those of other motorists. Too often, drivers fail to notice motorcycles, fail to look for them, or knowingly act in a manner unsafe to bikers, leading to dangerous situations and, possibly, even accidents.

When an accident occurs with a motorcycle, the laws in Illinois enable the victims of that crash to seek relief for their losses, including any medical expenses that may be incurred. Speaking with a lawyer who handles claims for motorcycle victims in Chicago is a good place to start if you have been involved in a crash and you were hurt.

In the meantime, it is up to every operator, whether a biker or the driver of a car, to put safety first when on the roads. If you are driving this weekend, keep the following motorcycle safety tips in mind:

– Always check your blind spots before changing lanes. If you are in the habit of regularly monitoring your side and rear view mirrors, you may feel confident that no car can be in your blind spots without your knowledge. But this is not true, especially when it comes to motorcycles that are small and that can easily maneuver into small spaces. Never change a lane, merge, or otherwise move over without making sure it is clear to do so first.

– Remember that the rules of the road apply equally to bikers. Whether you are at a four way stop sign or simply at an intersection controlled by a traffic light, remember that any bikers in the area may have the right-of-way, requiring you to wait until the motorcycle clears the area before you can proceed. Yielding the right-of-way and checking that traffic is clear before progressing are good ways to increase safety and reduce the risk of a collision.

– If you are riding a motorcycle, wear a helmet. Helmets decrease the risk of certain head injuries in the event of a collision and decrease the risk of death among those involved in a crash. Though you might leave home without the intention of a collision, you cannot control the actions of other drivers on the road, so wear a helmet to keep yourself as safe as possible Continue reading
