Parents are focused on protecting their children year-round, no matter the activities in which the child is engaged. Some regular functions involve a level of risk that most parents are aware exists – the best example of this remains the use of a vehicle, like a car, in traveling. When children are passengers in a car, there is always a risk that a collision will occur and that the child will become an innocent victim, forced to endure pain and suffering that comes with injuries caused by the crash.
Yet other activities should never pose a threat to the safety of a child if the adults around that kid are acting in a safe and reasonable manner. Despite the perceived safety of these types of activities, though, children in Chicago are injured every year and sustain a range of injuries from cuts and abrasions to broken bones and even death.
When tragedy strikes and a child’s life is altered as a result, that child and his or her family may be entitled to seek financial compensation for their injuries through the use of a civil claim for damages. These are a type of legal action that is separate and distinct from any charges that may be brought by local police and the goal of these actions is to provide victims with the monetary relief that they deserve. Payment can help those who have been hurt get the medical treatment they need and enable those families to move beyond the burden that comes with an accident.
On Wednesday, an accident occurred in the South Shore neighborhood that left an unsuspecting 10-year-old boy with serious injuries. According to local police, a dispute at a basketball court at a local park erupted and led to an 18-year-old man getting behind the wheel of an SUV. That man allegedly drove the SUV onto the basketball court where he struck the 10-year-old victim who was not believed to be the target of the teenage driver. The SUV jumped a curb to get onto the basketball court and there is disagreement as to whether the incident was or was not intentional.
The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. and left the boy in need of significant medical attention which he received at an area hospital. According to a woman who identified herself as the boy’s mother, the child needed surgery and sustained fractures as well as damage to his mouth.
Police have spoken with the driver of the SUV in this matter and it is not clear what charges, if any, that man will face.
