Weekends pose a high risk for car accidents in the Chicago area. Though it may seem like a collision is just as likely to occur at any time, statistics prove that certain days of the week and certain times of the day see a greater number of crashes than others.
Among these, weekends and rush hours are known to carry an extra risk of car accidents for different reasons. During the weekends, the incidence of driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol increases on Chicago’s streets and those impaired drivers are more likely to crash. During rush hour, congestion and rushing drivers fail to mix well, potentially leading to accidents like rear-end collisions. While these reasons explain some of the increase, other collisions continue to happen during weekends and rush hours and cannot be explained by impairment or congestion.
Yet if you become the victim of a car accident in Illinois, you will not care about what statistics say are your odds of being in a crash on a particular day of the week. You will not care if the time of day made you more vulnerable. You will focus on your injuries, if any, and the facts of the accident itself.
The facts and circumstances surrounding a collision will determine whether any injured victims have a right to seek relief in the form of financial compensation against those responsible for the crash. Typically, these claims are brought as civil complaints either in or out of a court of law and they can enable victims to recover for the totality of their damages. With typical accidents resulting in medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering, damages can accumulate quickly and a successful claim by a victim can enable that individual to get the money deserved following a crash.
Details are still emerging but authorities in Palos Heights have confirmed that a serious accident happened shortly before 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. The crash happened near Harlem Avenue and 143rd Street and involved two vehicles with at least one being struck in the front. Eight people total were inside the vehicles and six of them needed to be transported to area hospitals for treatment of their injuries where their current conditions are not known.
An investigation into the car accident is ongoing at this time and the results may determine whether anyone involved in the collision will be cited for the actions or will face other charges.
