This week has seen cooler weather come through Chicago, bringing with it feelings of fall and making residents consider things like back-to-school activities. Though it may feel cool when outdoors, summer is still ongoing and with it, many summertime activities. One of these for many in the Chicago area continues to be riding motorcycles.
Motorcycles can be ridden in many months in Illinois but the prime time for ridership remains summer, when the weather is warm and inclement weather is less likely than in other times of the year. The Illinois Department of Transportation reports that there are approximately 10.4 million registered vehicles within the state and that there are 240,000 registered motorcycles. Most of those motorcycles make an appearance on state roads or expressways at least once a year with a large number of them being utilized on a regular basis. While it may seem like only a minority of motorists choose to ride a motorcycle, safety of bikers should be a concern for all because you do not have to be on a motorcycle to be involved in a motorcycle accident.
It is the duty and responsibilty of every driver on the roads in Chicago to look for, notice, and respect the right of bikers but far too often, that is not what happens. Motorists may be in a hurry or may otherwise be distracted, causing them to overlook a biker. Or they may be speeding and may engage in threatening behavior that leads to a motorcycle crash simply because they made an unsafe move. In other cases, a motorcyclist may cause a crash with another biker or even another car. As each collision is unique, it is a good idea to speak with a personal injury attorney if you have been hurt in an accident and you have questions about your rights.
On Monday afternoon, a collision between a motorcycle and a car in Chicago left the biker in “grave condition,” according to local authorities who responded to the scene. The incident happened near the intersection of 95th Street and Vincennes Avenue on the city’s South Side but the cause of the crash has not been released.
Authorities have confirmed that the adult male riding the motorcycle was the one who suffered serious injuries and that he is a police officer who was off duty at the time of the impact. It is not known whether the driver of the car or whether anyone else in the area was also hurt in the crash.
